Boston Catholics & Liberalism

Senator Ted Kennedy berated Senator Rick Santorum yesterday for remarks Santorum made in a post at Catholic Online three years ago.

"Priests, like all of us, are affected by culture," Santorum wrote in a July 12, 2002 article for the Web site Catholic Online. "When the culture is sick, every element in it becomes infected. While it is no excuse for this scandal, it is no surprise that Boston, a seat of academic, political and cultural liberalism in America, lies at the center of the storm." (See full article here.)

As the Post article reports, Kennedy and other MA Democrats expressed their outrage at Santorum. I agree that Santorum painted with too broad a brush. In his criticism of fellow Catholics who repeatedly fail to uphold the Church's teachings on Christian sexuality, linked to liberalism, Santorum should have restricted his remarks to Chappaquiddick Ted.
