Hurricane Dennis: Funding Insanity

Albert Einstein said that insanity was doing the same thing over and over again yet expecting different results.

So why do we continue to subsidize people that choose to live in dangerous areas after multiple natural disasters? We as a country are right to provide disaster relief to people who lose everything after hurricanes, floods, or wildfires. I have had friends who have been devastated in such disasters as Hurrican Hugo and have heard firsthand the difficulties of living through such a horrible event.

Yet, we have decided to subsidize those who wish to live in such dangerous areas. Is anyone surprised to hear of homes destroyed in mudslides in Southern California or homes flooded along the Mississippi? Of course not. We all can see the reality of these dangerous places. However, the people that have chosen to live in these places (ironically, these are often quite expensive places to live) expect the rest of us to help pick up the cost through lower than necessary insurance premiums and direct government subsidies.
