Sen. Kerry calls for filibuster of Alito

Let us put aside for a moment whether Judge Alito should approved for the Supreme Court and look only at the political considerations. It appears today that John Kerry has decided to commit political suicide.

Kerry announced from Davos, Switzerland today that he would support filibustering the nomination of Samuel Alito. This comes on the heels of committee hearings that put Democratic Senators in the worst light because of their attacks on Alito.

Hear this: I'm not positive that I support Judge Alito. But he has certainly shown himself to be more than competent and qualified for the position. And quite frankly, I could care less what his political views are: they are not germane to the discussion and shouldn't have anything to do with his role as a judge.

Back to Kerry: How can Kerry and some of the other Democratic Senators be so tone-deaf? If anything, this nomination should give pause to many in the Democratic party that has allowed itself to be led down the road to extremism and vitriolic rhetoric.

Update: Captain Ed has an amusing take on the "comedy duo from Massachussetts."
